Facilitating Access to Health Care for All

Why I am a Champion for this Cause

I believe in the power of grassroots community healthcare.

I’ve been involved with the Ithaca Health Alliance since joining as a provider member in 1998. Now it is my honor to serve as Executive Director.  At the Ithaca Free Clinic, each of our volunteers and each of patients has a story, a reason that brings them seeking to care and be cared for. That’s one of the things I love about the Health Alliance – how the power of community gets people to care and care to people. We can all be Health Allies. Please join me!

Now, for those who need a bit more inspiration, I am taking on my own HEALTH CHALLENGE and I’d like you to SPONSOR ME as I strive to improve my vision! My eye muscles have gotten back into some bad habits, and with your encouragement I will spend 5 minutes a day, 5 days a week, doing eye exercises and light therapy at home in the month of August.  Please sponsor me at $20, $40 or $100 ($1, $2 or $5 per day), or any amount you choose. My vision will improve and we’ll raise funds for the Ithaca Free Clinic at the same time. I know that 5 minutes a day doesn’t sound like much time, but for someone with my visual challenges this will actually take a lot of discipline and effort. Your support will really help me! And you’ll help others, too. I am able to do the exercises and light therapy because one year, I met my insurance deductible and was able to get coverage for vision training, which I otherwise could not have afforded, and I was given the tools I needed for home practice.

Two really important things about the Ithaca Free Clinic:

1) Most of the patients who come to the Ithaca Free Clinic are working people without access to affordable health care, and the Affordable Care Act will still leave many of them behind.

2) We provide services with the generous help of over 100 volunteers and only 4 paid staff (2 part time). Many of our volunteers were drawn to offer their time and talents to the Health Alliance because of their own experiences with the challenges of obtaining affordable care for themselves or a family member.

About the photo: in this photo, I am serving birthday cake at the Health Alliance’s 15th Birthday Party last August. It was a wonderful party, and I even learned to hula hoop – finally!
